Earlier this week I popped in to an opening of a photo exhibition at Erika Deák Gallery in Budapest. "Instax" is a group exhibition within the Budapest Photo Festival. Fuji Instax Wide 300 camera was given to 7 artists to experiment  moments and create their own vision. 

Polaroid technique is somewhere between analogue and digital image making. All these photos are without any manipulation of reality. They are moments. 

I like the photos and the way they are displayed - very artistic, interesting and inspiring. 

Absolutely worth visiting if you happen to be in Budapest in April. 

(FI) Aikaisemmin tällä viikolla piipahdin valokuvanäyttelyn avajaisissa Erika Deák Galleriassa Budapestissa. Instax-ryhmänäyttely on osa Budapest Photo Festivalin ohjelmistoa. Seitsemälle taiteilijalle annettiin Fuji Instax wide 300 kamera ja pyydettiin tallentamaan hetkiä ja luomaan jotain oman näköistä.

Polaroid-tekniikka on jossain analogisen ja digitaalisen kuvan tekemisen välimaastossa. Näissä kuvissa ei ole manipuloitu todellisuutta, toisin kuin monissa somessa vilisevissä kuvissa.

Kuvat ovat mielenkiintoisia, taiteellisia ja inspiroivia, samoin niiden esittelytapa.

Kannattaa ehdottomasti pistäytyä jos olet Budapestissa tässä kuussa.

Independence Through The Lenses by Finnish Photographers

On Monday there was an opening night of a photo exhibition called "Independence through the lenses" in Robert Capa Center. The exhibition is part of a programme on the centenary of Finland's independence in 2017. 

In this exhibition in Budapest there are shown works by seven Finnish photographers. They are all telling by their photos something about Finland. Basically all the good things were left aside and the artists want to show that it might not be the jackpot to live in Finland - as we were told in my childhood.

The experience of independence, cultural traditions and memories shape the ways of seeing and looking at ourshelves and at others. I believe in the freedom of speech. Especially in art everyone should be able to express themselves and tell their own story. Not everything needs to be pretty & light - even though I prefer to look at beautiful yet interesting things in art.

There are many fantastic shots and all the photos are technically gorgeous. I also like a lot the idea how the pics are framed and what materials are used on prints. Even those square ones printed on a rather thin paper and hung with pins look so great.

As a Finn I just didn't feel related to these photos. Many of them are too made up and I felt that they are lacking some sort of humanity.

(FI) Maanantai-iltana Budapestissa oli Robert Capa Centerissä valokuvanäyttelyn avajaiset, jossa esillä oli 7 suomalaisen valokuvaajan tuotantoa aiheesta itsenäinen Suomi 100 vuotta.

Kukin taiteilija kertoo kuvillaan omia kokemuksiaan maamme itsenäisyydestä. Nyt ei keskitytä siihen kuinka loistava maa Suomi on vaan näytetään se toinen puoli Suomesta. 

Sananvapaus on totta kai tärkeää myös taiteessa. Arvostan kantaaottavaa ja kapinoivaa taidetta - ei kaiken tarvitse olla niin nättiä, vaikka pidänkin taiteesta jota on miellyttävä katsella.

Näyttelyssä on monia aivan fantastisia kuvia ja kaikki kuvat ovat tekniseltä tasoltaan ihan huippua. Tykkäsin kovin myös siitä miten kuvat oli laitettu esille. Erilaiset kehykset, kuvien koot ja materiaalit tukivat hyvin kuvia ja lisäsivär niiden mielenkiintoa.

Näin suomalaisena en kuitenkaan tuntenut yhteyttä kuvien sanomaan. Jotkut kuvista oli liian tehtyjä ja aseteltuja. Jäin kaipaamaan niissä jonkinlaista inhimillisyyttä.

Jos käyt katsomassa tämän näyttelyn, olisi kiva kuulla mitä mieltä olit!

Portrait Photography In Daylight

(EN)Had a wonderful afternoon shooting portrait pics of Anna in daylight. It was a cloudy and rainy day but later in the afternoon there was for a moment a little sunshine, which gave a beautiful golden light.

The aim was to make a couple photos, which Anna could use for her work passes, some official and not so official pages, sites and documents. I feel most comfortable when shooting near so I use a 50mm lense - I hope I will soon be able to buy a 70 or 80mm lense - and blurring the backdrop. It was a pleasure to have a photo session with her. She's so beautiful and easy to work with.

When shooting outdoors in a daylight the light is very harsh on a sunny day. On a cloudy day the light diffused, softened and scattered, and the sunlight is still directional and creates a dark side to the subject. I used a diffuser in most of the pics. Tried a reflector but it made the light side too light. Found out how practical it would have been to use a compass to find out where the sun is in a cloudy day.

(FI) Minullapa oli aivan ihana iltapäivä Annan kanssa. Kuvasin hänestä potretteja päivän valossa. Keli oli pilvinen ja sateinen, mutta myöhemmin iltapäivällä aurinko alkoi pilkottaa ja valo oli hetken upean kultainen. 

Tarkoituksena oli ottaa muutama sellainen kuva, jota Anna voisi käyttää työpasseissa, joissakin virallisissa ja epävirallisissa dokumenteissa ja sivustoilla. Tykkään ottaa kuvia mahdollisimman läheltä ja kuvasin nämä 50mm linssillä - toiveissa on 70 tai 80mm linssi - ja tykkään myös kun tausta on blurrattu. Annaa oli aivan ihana kuvata kun hän on niin kaunis ja valokuvauksellinen. 

Ulkona päivänvalossa kuvattaessa valo on raaka varsinkin aurinkoisena päivänä. Pilvisenä päivänä valo on suodatettua, pehmeää ja hajanaista, mutta silti auringonvalo pilvien takaa tulee jostain suunnasta ja luo kuvattavalle kohteelle tumman, varjoisan puolen. Käytin suodatinta useimmissa kuvissa. Kokeilin myös reflaa (heijastavaa pintaa), mutta silloin valoisammasta puolesta tuli liian valoisa.  Tajusin kuinka kätevää olisi ollut käyttää kompassia ja sen avulla tarkistaa missä suunnassa aurinko piileksii pilvisenä päivänä.

Should I Use A Flash?

Had a chance to try different flashes in a studio workshop the other day. Light makes such a huge difference depending on its direction, if a filter or a reflector is used, etc. Here are some examples.

Light can be cold & blueish or warm & redish, and anything in between. It's measured in Kelvins. Color balance is 3200k indoors and 5500k outdoors.

My Little Princess & Prince

I don't usually post too personal pics, but now as I'm practicing to take portraits and using the timing of my camera I decided to share these photos of my little bunnies, who have grown so fast...

Made it - only 2 sec time to jump into the pic!

Well, well, well...

 Usually I just take snapshots, loads of them, and quite easily I can find one or two pretty nice ones. But now I wanted to concentrate and take a still photos of a setting that I created…All of them awful! Not just the display but none of the pics turn out to be even close to a good one… I used different shutter speeds, different apertures, zooming from different distances etc etc. Now I know that it really takes something to be a good photographer, and a stylish, too.

Tavallisesti napsin paljon kuvia ja tarvittaessa niistä löytyy yleensä yksi tai kaksi ihan toimivaa. No, nyt halusin tehdä asetelma ja ottaa siitä kivoja kuvia. Lopputulos: kaikki aivan kauheita! Ei pelkästään tämä tekemäni asetelma vaan myös kaikki ottamani kuvat. Säädin aukkoja ja valoitusta, zoomasin läheltä ja kaukaa jne jne. nytpähän ainakin tiedän ettei hyväksi valokuvaajaksi tulla hetkessä, eikä muuten stailistiksikaan.

My camera is Canon EOS 450D.

Learn a lot about shutter speed, aperture and ISO.
