Tower Heist

Monday, November 21, 2011

Went to movies in Santa Monica...

...to see Tower Heist starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy
- the film was pretty good!
- if you're a bit tired of Eddie Murphy dressing up like a woman,
this movie is something different,
for sure they had fun making it

Main Street

Sunday, November 20, 2011

Beginning at the bottom of the Third Street Promenade
Main Street leads from Santa Monica to the heart of Venice

The '30s-era Santa Monica City Hall on 1685 Main Street

Cute little doggie in the front of a hair salon on Main Street
- the most interesting stretch of Main St runs between
Pico Blvd and Rose Ave
Had both manicure and pedicure in this nail spa on Main Street
- superb pampering experiment,
making the nails was like Chinese art,
they are real professionals here
- walk-ins are welcome

Eclectic and funky Weego Home interiors shop on Main Street
Happy modern murals
One example of public art displayed along Main Street
- Edgemar Center for the Arts
and California Heritage Museum are also found here

No snow-boarding in Venice
but Big Bear nearby is already open!
Interesting chandelier on a shop window

By the early '70s, the majority of the neighbourhood's
attractions had been demolished,
and Main Street itself had become a slum.

Sculptor Paul Conrad's Chain Reaction (1991)
- stainless-steel and copper-link chin statement
against nuclear war
Today Main Street is an upmarket strip
- dating from the early 20th century
- a wide range of largely independent shops,
coffeehouses, restaurants,
beauty salons and first-rate art galleries
are found on Main St
Jonathan Borofsky's Ballerina Clown
on the corner of Main Street and Rose Avenue
View from a side street of Main Street to the ocean

Food on Main
Galley on 2442 Main St is the oldest restaurant in Santa Monica
- American cuisine

- organic coffees, teas and food
Lula on Main St

Among these there're 2 Starbucks,

Santa Monica Pier

Friday, October 28, 2011

 Santa Monica Pier
with amusing park, boardwalk, arcades and fishing areas
 Entrance to the pier
- the pier has been very popular since 1908
View from the pier bridge to Palisades Park
 Santa Monica Pier
- cafes, restaurants, ice-cream parlours
 The end of Route 66
Had a seafood lunch on the pier

 Pop corn shrimps
 Snow-crab and clams
 The snow-crab was delicious
 More shrimps...
No need to say the lunch was pretty heavy!
 Santa Monica beach
- not so busy in the end of October
- Baywatch made the beach famous around the world,
but it's been the star of LA's coastline since the 1890s

View of Santa Monica Pier from Palisades Park
Had a walk up in the palisades Park
- 2,5km long path for walking and jogging
The park is on the bluff overlooking to the ocean
Variety of semitropical trees and plants
 Santa Monica beach houses
Not so many skyscrapers in town

Everywhere the greens and lawns are extremely well kept

Cocina Mexicana

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

On the way back home from the shopping spree
saw this Mexican Restaurant Lula on Main Street
- decided to have a try!
 Tortilla chips with salsa picante
 Tlacoyos
- not very familiar with the Mexican kitchen
so asked the waiter to recommend something to start with
- tlacoyos:
black bean masa boats stuffed with lima bean puree,
topped with radishes, queso fresco and
avocado tomatillo sauce
- interesting and delicious,
a bit like Indian samosa

  Camarones tostadas
- shredded green salad on the top of a taco and black beans
with grilled shrimps
- good, nothing special, like a salad
Dia de los muertos coming soon!

Lula Cocina Mexicana
2720 Main Street
Santa Monica, CA 90405
