Today you couldn't avoid seeing people eating ice cream all over the city. It was an Ice Cream Day in Budapest, actually Hungarian Artisan Ice Cream Day. Many Hungarian confectioneries and creameries were inviting people to try their creations for only a half of the original price. Every Hungarian likes sweets so there were queues in front of every ice cream parlour.
I try to eat healthy (except the several kilos of chocolate I eat on weekly basis), so I wanted to try something that at least sounds as a healthier option and went for sugarfree ice cream at Zichy Jenő utca in VI district, which is nearby my home. Fittnass Cukraszda is a tiny place and today there was only one girl scooping so it took about half an hour to be served. But the weather was nice so it was not a problem to stand outside in a queue.
They ran out of the cups for ice cream, but luckily still had some paper coffee cups. The ice cream was more like sorbet and it was delicious, really fruity. I chose orange, banana, honeydew and strawberry.
Fittnass is also serving gluten-, milk- and eggfree as well as vegan and paleo pastries. Have to try them!
Ice Cream Day sounds like an incredible holiday that we really need to make to catch on over here! I'm not too keen on low fat ice cream though. If you are going to cheat and have ice cream you may as well go the whole hog.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you - ice cream day is a fantastic idea and I'm not into low fat at all. But if you have a special diet you need to follow it's great to know there're options. I like to avoid sugar as much as I can. Not an easy task for me as I can't leave wthout chocolate.
DeleteIce Cream Day is awesome! I love how everyone participates too! But my favorite comment of the whole thing was "I try to eat healthy (except the several kilos of chocolate I eat on weekly basis!)" I think I am going to laugh about that all day!

Alison, I know it sounds absurd and even funny, but to be able to eat tons of chocolate you just need to keep it healty otherwise :D
DeleteWhy can't we have an ice cream day here in Scotland??! Probably too cold for it and its very rare for us to get a bit of sun lol! Great article, your pictures are fab :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kerry :) People here in Budapest really love ice cream. There are queues to every parlour during the summer. Well, it's not so warm and sunny in Finland either but still the Finns eat it and shiver at the same time :D
DeleteIce Cream Day sounds like my kind of day! I am going back to Budapest in September so I'll have to have my own ice cream time x
ReplyDeleteOh, great! Who knows there might be another ice cream day in early autumn :D
DeleteWow this is a dream ! I'm soooo addicted to ice-cream !!! I wish I could take everyone to Budapest on this particular day only to be FULL of ice-cream ! Thank you for sharing this gem :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome! Book your trip to Budapest :)
DeleteI wish we had ice cream day here in Toronto! That sounds awesome :) (And I try to eat healthy too but the chocolate gets in the way lol)
ReplyDeleteI agree - it's funny how the chocolate always finds its way to my plate :D
DeleteYou guys have a day just dedicated to ice cream? You are officially the coolest people ever!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you! :D
DeleteI just love ice creams. Be summer or winter I run after them. i dont mind having a cracked voice in winters too sometimes :P. But the best I had ever had was in Macclesfield. It's a small town in outside Manchester. If you ever go there do try its ice cream. It's very famous.
ReplyDeleteSounds great! Thanks for the tip :)
DeleteIce cream day sounds like the best day ever. That fruity flavor combo you tried sounds really good. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteIt was so delicious :)

Deleteice cream is love! i love desserts and its good that they have so many options!
ReplyDeletetherese glenn
There were so many options to choose from :)
DeleteSo, was it worth it, how does the sugar-free alternative compare, I love frozen yoghurt as the healthier version of ice cream, and as the summer season approaches I'll be having it a lot! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, it was! It was so deliciously fruity :)
DeleteOh my gosh, this post makes me hungry! What a lovely way to enjoy a holiday, both Budapest and a ice-cream day moved up my list, thanks to you haha.

DeleteIce cream day ? That's something I'd completely be a part of ! Often the sugar free ice cream taste pretty much like frozen smoothies ! They're delicious and healthier. Glad you had fun
ReplyDeleteYou're right - it's kind of a frozen smoothie except more delicious!
