Flagler Museum

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Visited Flagler Museum in Palm Beach.

Henry Morrison Flagler (1830 –1913) was an American industrialist and a founder of Standard Oil.
He was also a key figure in the development of the eastern coast of Florida along the Atlantic Ocean
and was founder of what became the Florida East Coast Railway.
He is known as the father of Miami and also founded Palm Beach, Florida.

The 55-room mansion was built in 1902 by Henry Flagler.
The red, wood-paneled library has a somewhat intimate feel.
 Inside courtyard.
Henry Flagler gave this mansion to his wife, Mary Lily Kenan, as a wedding present.
Silk wall-coverings and draperies adorn this ornate
Louis XVI-style drawing room.
The bedroom furnished in yellow silk damask, a faithful copy of the original Rococo-style fabric, was the master bedroom.
On the right side:a gorgeous double washstand made of onyx. It belonged to the master bathroom.
East portico is supported by massive fluted columns.

 The main entrance.
Outsized urns are placed on the steps in front.
There's also a cafe in the premises.
Café des Beaux-Arts serves afternoon tea
from Thanksgiving until Easter.
The Flagler Kenan Pavilion is designed in the style of a 19th-centurey Beaux=Arts railway palace.
The clock is by Tiffany & Co.

Have to admit - the place was stunning!

The Gardens Mall

Monday, January 21, 2013

On Saturday drove up to Palm Beach to see some drag racing,
but as the weather was slightly rainy the whole event was cancelled - what a pity (NOT!)!
Anyway, the plan was to visit the Gardens Mall
as it's nearby the raceway - instead of being there just
for an hour or so, had plenty of time to explore it!

Beside the big department stores like Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom and Saks Fifth Avenue there're almost all the brands from Chanel to Anthropologie.

Lobster burger for lunch at Bloomongdale's bistro.

Found something to buy as well...
There're huge sales everywhere!

Even though the race was cancelled still had chance to meet
our friends Michelle and Mike for a coffee at the mall.
It was a nice day!

Worth Avenue

Monday, March 5, 2012

On Monday spent the day in Palm Beach,
around 70 miles from Miami Beach.

It is said that there are seventysomething
Donatella Versace lookalikes wearing Herve Leger in Palm Beach.
Well, at least you can buy Herve Leger there on Worth Avenue.

All the high-end designer labels are represented on Worth Avenue.
It's almost like walking on via Montenapoleone in Milan...

Unfortunately the Flagler Museum is closed on Mondays.
It's a turn-of-the-century mansion
and one of the greatest Gilded Age mansions in the world.
Next time!

Ps.the coastal area of Palm Beach, especially
along South Ocean Boulevard, nicknamed Mansion Row,
is full of multimillion-dollar private houses
in all kinds of architectural styles
from Neo-Classical to Art Deco.
