Growing Hyacinths On A Window Sill

Saturday, February 20, 2016

Let's see when these supposedly white hyacinths will blossom - cant' wait!

Indoors hyacinths need bright light so to place them on a window sill is a good idea. The bulbs need water but not soaking although they can be grown in water as in a decorative vase but only the roots should dangle into water. The temperature should be warm but rather on the cool side - not hot.

After blooming I have usually just tossed away the whole plant, but it can be saved. Once the leaves are dead, the entire plant should be cut back to soil level, so only bulb and roots remain.
The pot should be moved to a cold, dark space. Even a black garbage bag can be put over it to keep the pot out of the light. Just to keep it that way until next spring. At htat point, it should be gradually exposed to light. The plant will begin to send up new shoots, meaning it will take up more and more space each year. So probably the plant must be moved into a bigger pot or it can be plant outside to give it more room to grow.
I will put them into my large balcony pots!

Hyacinths are often associated with spring and rebirth.

Let There Be Light

Time to relax - at least for a moment.

Hetki aikaa rentoutua.

Be ready for a new week!

Valmiina uuteen viikkoon!

ps. had a great Finnish dinner last night - starting with slightly salted white fish and vendace roe, then tenderloin of moose with mash potatoe, chantarelle sauce and lingonberries, after that assortement of finnish cheese including Aura blue cheese, Mustapekka peppered fresh cheese, Black label emmental, Lapland cheese curd with cloudberries, and for dessert icy cranberries with hot fudge. The red wine was from Sauska winery from Villány.
Absolutely perfect!

New Dress

Thursday, January 19, 2012

Yeah, new dress but not for me.

 Yesterday red, today deep lilac.
It was difficult to find a flower in Budapest
that fits to the new colour scheme.
Blueish hyacinth was the only one.

By the way, it drinks the water in one second.

Huge fan of Crabtree & Evelyn's hand creams and lotions.
The scent of this Iris one is so gorgeous.
The deep lilac hand towels are from Coin.
