Shopping in Corfu

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Didn't actually do almost any shopping
in Corfu
- but this street was rather interesting
.

That's how it looks like
.
and this what it's promising
.
Also DVF & Marc Jacobs
- nice, small boutiques
.
Bought only this pair of golden sandals
- "Nikki Me" label is most probably a Greek one
.
and some Greek cosmetics by Korres
www.korres.com
.

Corfu Old Town

What would be a better place to spend
a rainy Saturday afternoon
than Liston!
.
The Liston was built in 1807
by Mathieu de Lesseps, a Frenchman
- a fine example of the architecture of
the Napoleonic period
- the terrace was inspired by the
Rue de Rivoli in Paris
.
Before that went to the newsagent's
on the street just behind Liston,
which sells newspapers and mags
all over the world...
.
..to buy Finnish "Ilta-Sanomat"
- it arrives 1 day behind,
so on Saturday got Friday's paper
.
Arched Liston
- it was packed
but managed to find a nice table there
.
Read the newspaper,
drank diet coke
and ate mini-muffins!
.
As it was the last day
wanted to make a nice walk
on the strets of the Old Town
.

A beautifully restored house
.
Campiello is Corfu Town's old quarter
.
The Venetian influence can be seen
in the buildings
and narrow streets
.
The ground is smoothly paved
and very slippery when raining!
.
Nice small house
.
Mansions on the border of Campiello
.
Houses facing the Esplanade
(Spianada):
.

.
Big plus for the hotel:
as the check-out time was at noon,
got another room to stay as long as wanted
- had a shower before hitting to the airport
The Corfu airport was packed
and not enough facilities,
absolutely no worth of going there
any earlier than needed
.
The bathroom of room 424
- forgot to take a pic of the bathroom
of 621,
it had the same style but more spacious
with 2 basins
.
Had a great holiday!
.

Antivouniotissa Museum

Monday, September 6, 2010

This charming museum is housed in the
Church of Panagia Antivouniotissa
- a superb collection of
Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons
and exquisite ecclesiastical treasures
.
.
.
.
Church of Panagia Antivoutiotissa
.
As a big fan of Byzantine art
this museum was fascinating!
.

Archaeological Museum

Located near the sea front,
just behind Corfu Palace hotel,
the Archaeological Museum has become
one of the most notable institutions in Greece
- originally founded in 1960s to display
finds from the ancient Temple of Artemis
.
Dionysus Pediment
- depicting a meeting of ancient Greek officials
who are surrounded by their animals
and possessions
- good eample of 5th-century-BC workmanship
.
Gorgon Medusa Pediment
- originally part of the Temple of Artemis
- it's a stunning 17-m-lng frieze!
- the snake-haired Medusa and her children
- dates from around 590 BC
.
Not so interested in ancient things & ruins,
but this museum was quite fascinating
and easy to handle!
.

Taverna Porta Remounda

It was the last chance to dine at
the favourite taverna Porta Remounda
so went there on Friday evening
- this time ate inside, not on the terrace
.

Sarnines on the house
- yummy!
.
Grilled shrimps
- great again!
.
Mussels cooked with feta cheese
- interesting very delicious taste,
a bit hot
- totally new experience!
.
Snapper like Greek fish
- gorgeous taste & texture!
.
Forgot to mention that dined
at a more touristic place
called Mythos
on Wednesday night
- the food was ok
and the sevice was overhelming
.
Zucchini balls
- too soft, should have been crispier
.
Garides saganaki
- shrimps & feta cheese in tomato sauce
- good, very basic
.
Grilled branzino
- grilled fish is something that you can't go wrong
if the fish is fresh
- good !
.
Mythos
128 Nikiforou Theotoki Str
(Agios Antonios)
Kerkyra
.

Achilleion Palace

Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi)
welcoming the visitors
.
Friday morning spent by the pool,
skipped the lunch
and drove to Achilleion Palace
.
Neo-Classical Palace
- built in the late 1890s
for the Empress Elisabeth of Austria
.
The entrance hall to the palace is
dominated by a massive
marble staircase and
stunning ceiling decorations
.
Pale mint green room
.
Detail of a wall decoration
.
Gorgeous fireplace
.
Interesting detail:
dark red ceiling and pale blue walls
.
View of Corfu Town from the palace garden
.
Huge statue of Achilles
before he got shot by an arrow to his heel
.
Beautiful pilars in the inner courtyard
.
The palace was ok,
but unfortunately only the ground floor
was open for public,
and there was not so many personal belongings
of Sissi
- it could have been made better & nicer
even by using replicas
.
On the way back to Corfu Town
it started to rain
and the weather changed much cooler
.
Rainy & windy evening!
.

Greek BBQ Night

On Thursday had dinner at the hotel
as it was a special BBQ night
with Greek dancing show
.
Chicken, lamb, pork, corn from the grill
.
Delicious stuffed tomatoes and
green belly peppers
among the others
.
Diffferent kinds of salads,
olives, cheese,
and salmon(!!!)
- didn't eat salmon though,
somehow it doesn't fit in Greece!
.
Dessert buffet
- ate too much...
.
Corfian dances
.
The show was in 2 parts,
first part was Corfian dances,
secong part typical Greek dances
- 2 girls & 2 boys
- could easily see that it wasn't the first time
they were dancing
- very good!
.
Boys dancing Sirtaki
.
Nice evening!
.
