You can only get the original Sachertorte at Sacher - Demel also makes Sachertorte, but with their own recipe.

Weekend in Vienna

Friday, October 9, 2009

- had a late breakfast in the train;
a cheese omelett
- stayed in the restaurant carriage all way long
- nice service & pleasant atmosphere
.
From Westbahnhof took U3 metro line
to Herrengasse
- just next to the hotel where'd booked a room,
Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof
.
Among the shopping spree
had a break at Sacher Stube
with the traditional piece of Sacher cake
& a whole pot of tea
.
. Horse stalls in the city center!

Imperial Court Palace

Sunday, August 16, 2009

Imperial Court Palace in Innsbruck
Built as residence of the Tyrolean provincial rulers under
Archduke Sigmund the Rich and
extended under Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519).
Maria Theresa (1717-1780) rebuilt the Palace
in the late Viennese baroque style
and called it her "little Schönbrunn of the Alps".
During the 19th century the interior was adapted
in the style of the time.
.
Now only the State Rooms were for public,
the Private Rooms were under renovation.
- what a pity!
- but the 4 state rooms were beautiful,
unfortunately it wasn't allowed to take photos there
.
There was also Mountains, A Mysterious Passion exhibition there
- it's about the mountains & mountain climbing
.

Including also some interesting paintings of the mountains
. . Cyanometer, 1944
- the darker the blue,
the cleaner the air
.
Learnt also that a drug called Pervitin was allowed,
because it gave a person the strenght
to go all away up to 8.000m!!!
- in 1950s doping was not considered a problem
.
Cafe Sacher was in the same building,
so visited there as well

Some cakes on display
. A piece of the famous cake
. Austrian cafe style
. Concidering the wall,
lots of famous people have visited Cafe Sacher
.

A day in Vienna

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Went to Vienna on Midsummer Day
to accompanied a friend
for shopping a cocktail dress
.
Suddenly a chilly & rainy day!
Had to wear a trenchcoat
in the midsummer
in the middle of Europe,
never happened before
during my 12 years living here.
Unbeliveable!
.
Had a nice day despite the weather!
.
Lunch at Danieli
.
Delicious tomato soup with mozzarella
.
Ristorante Osteria Pescaria
Danieli
Himmelpfortgasse 3
Wien 1
.
Naturally had an afternoon tea
with a slice of Sacher
at Sacher Bistro
.
Before leaving Vienna
bought some flowers for home
.

.
Bought also a box of macaroons,
"laakrone",
at Oberlaa
. Ate them all,
just an empty box left...

Lunch at Palmenhaus

Monday, January 12, 2009

.
Saturday lunch at Palmenhaus
.

Grilled fillet of tuna with salad
with a glass of local white wine
Grüner Veltlinger Nussberg 2007
.

The tuna was grilled exactly the right time
-pink inside, almost raw
- excellent choice!
.

Huge portion of salad
- too huge actually, 1/3 would have been enough
- a bit too much oil dressing
.

The beautiful conservatory was built between 1901-1907
design by Jugendstil architect Friedrich Ohman
.

.
Cafe Restaurant Palmenhaus
Burggarten
1010 Vienna
Cuisine: Mediterran, Austrian
- kid-friendly
Rating: 3/5
- good food, good service, easy to come in, relaxed atmosphere
- not a cosy place, might be different in the evenings
...
Never skipped the Sacher in Vienna!
So after walking and shopping went for a tea and a piece of Sacher cake at Sacher Stube.
