Nassau

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Approaching Nassau in the morning.
Nassau's main street, Bay Street, is full of high-end stores and boutiques. Jewellery, watches, cosmetics, bags....
I did buy something starting with G...
Local policemen.
The town of Nassau.
Shells of queen conch.

This is how conch looks on the plate.
Conch fritters are my favourites!
Had them for lunch in Nassau.

Atlantis on Paradise Island.
Been there once so skipped going there this time.
Still in use?
Norwegian Sky looks pretty small beside Oasis of the Seas...
There were 5 cruise ships at Nassau port at the same time,
which makes over 10.000 guests on the streets of the town.
Mick Jagger's???
Dinner at French restaurant Le Bistro.
Menu:
Asparagus with orange hollandaise and mushrooms
Lobster in butter sauce with artichoke and potato
Vanilla creme brûlée
Wine:
Pouilly Fuisse
Beautiful Versace plates!

Towel art in the stateroom.
Cute bunny & penguin.

On Monday morning after breakfast it was time to say goodbye
to Norwegian Sky and go back to sunny South Beach.

Blue Water Resort

Saturday, January 23, 2010

The resort was made some 30 years ago
- some of the apartments are in a really poor condition,
some quite ok
- well-equipmented with tv, kitchen, air-condition,
washing machine & tumble-drier
- in our 2-bathroom apartment the showers worked well
(for 7 persons 3 bedrooms was ok,
3rd bathroom would've also been nice!)
.
Apartments have 3 floors
and a small patio on the other side
.
Cleaning was included
as had to pay a special cleaning fee in advance,
but only one cleaning was made in the whole time = 2 weeks,
which was changing the sheets, emptying the dustbins
and something else,
but not a proper cleaning was made
.

Oh Andros

Dinner at Oh Andros at Fish Fry on Thursday evening
.
- Thursday was a beach day
and in the late afternoon went to downtown
to check the diamond stores
- was prepared to buy a pair of earrings,
but didn't find any real nice ones,
so left empty handed
.
Crab salad
- excellent & so tasty
. Conch fritters
- good as always
. Shared this portion of grilled grouper
. and also this fried grouper
- both fish were excellent
Once again got lots of side dishes!
.
It's very difficult to rate the resturants in Nassau
- visited mainly common eateries,
not fancy ones
- the food was good in all these places,
and very similar, didn't really differ
.Bahamian cuisine seems to consist of
fish, seafood & chicken
mainly with plantain, rice'n beans, coleslaw
Simple & tasty
.

Local beers:
Sands & Kalik
Wines are not recommended,
unless you like sweet ones
.

Running Track

Went running in this beautiful park in Cable Beach
every morning
- to be honest, run only once 2 rounds,
rest of the week walked there in the mornings
- had taken only Feelmax shoes with,
those shoes are good for running inside
or on soft surfice,
but not on hard concrete
- after the first morning run legs were in agony...
.
Very well looked after park
.
Went there usually between 7 and 8 in the morning
- lots of people running, jogging & walking
.
The sun is rising around 6,30am,
twilight time is very short,
the sun sets around 6pm
.
It was so great to walk in this surrounding
.
These gorgeous ones usually seen only inside,
not in gardens
.
Fresh ferns
.
Lovely light blue flowers,
no idea of their name
.

Snorkling Excursion

On Wednesday joined a snorkling excursion
organized by Stuart Cove's
- pick up time at 8.30am at the hotel
.
- the bus took us to South Ocean Beach
where the boats're waiting
.
First stop was close to Goulding Cay
- here it was also possible to feed fish
.
The staff gave good instructions
and helped people to go into the water
.

Second stop was near Nygård Cay
which is named after Finnish-born Peter Nygård
whose house burnt down a couple of years ago
-still looks quite dramatic
- locals told that he has already started rebuilding it
.
Personal "submarines"
- funny looking!
- absolutely too scary to try one!
.
.
The reef was full of colourful fish species
- was told not to touch the coral,
because it could cause a burning painful feeling for a long time
.
Last stop was to meet some sharks....
- the instructions were very strict:
no feeding
no splashing
at least one hand on the rope,
other hand next to body
- a bait of rotten fish was placed in the bottom
to atract sharks
.
After everyone got back to the boat,
the staff was feeding the shark
and they came up near the surface
.
.
Back in Nassau had lunch at
Jamaican-Bahamian restaurant
- full of locals,
no tourist at all
Fried whole snapper
with typical side dishes:
rice'n beans & plantain
- good, rather spicy
.

Bahamian Kitchen

Tuesday dinner at Bahamian Kitchen
in downtown of Nassau
.
A bit boring to always start with conch fritters
- but they are so delicious & unique!
.
Fried mahi-mahi with rice'n beans
& coleslaw
- ok, the texture of fish was too soft &
like it had been in a some kind of liquid
.
The interiors of the restaurants in Nassau
are quite simple,
yet colourful
.
Eye-catching curtains!

Transparent plastics to protect the tablecloths
.
.
After the dinner went to see the bar,
which was in another room of the restaurant
.
Only locals were in the bar
- the man in the middle was on TV,
he's a lawer & politician
- funny man who represents Love & Peace party
and claims to be the Prime Minister of Bahamas one day
Let's see....
.

Beach Day

Tuesday was a perfect beach day
.

The beach at the Blue Waters Resort
.
Pool area of Blue Waters
.
Didn't stay there,
instead walked along the beach to Sheraton
- got a sunbed there,
had also lunch there:
Chicken Caesar
- very good!
.
