There are so many beautiful buildings in Budapest. If you look up you can see gorgeous details in the facades. The other day I had a chance to participate a little Budapest architecture & furniture design walk and learn & heard interesting stories about the design history of the city.
Most of the houses at Grand Boulevard were built in the the late 19th century. Btw, Grand Boulevard is the Ring Road starting from Margit Bridge on Pest side and continuting all the way to Petőfi Bridge. The styles of these buildings represent Neo Gothic, Neo Renaissance, Neo Baroque and Neo Rococo.
The facades and corners were often decorated with evil features to protect the house from bad things. Often these figures were from the Greek mythology such as snake haired Medusa, but also from the history of Hungary such as a soldier with moustach and plaits.
Take a peek inside of one of the buildings while walking in the city. You can find gorgeous entrances, staircases and courtyards. I took a couple of pics of an entrance near Vígszínház. The ceiling was full of beautiful paintings in Bombay style.
The houses were apartment buildings already then. The first floor was for the owner and the the upper floors were rented out. The higher you went the lower was the rent, because there were no lifts. The servants lived on the top floor and there were also the bathrooms and laundry department.
The homes were decorated to suit for the style of the house, so pieces of furniture representd these specific styles as well.

(FI) Budapest on täynnä upeita rakennuksia.
Suurin osa Kaarikadun taloista rakennettiin 1800-luvun loppupuoliskolla.
Budapest Architecture & Furniture Design walk was organized by BÁV Antique shop at Szent István krt. Super thanks for our guide art historian & furniture valuator Márk Görbe. He was so symphatic and passionate on art history.
