Alhambra

Spain is such a huge country and has so many wonderful & different kinds of places to see and visit. Granada is for sure one of the most fascinating ones, especially Alhambra. Had heard so much about it and seen gorgeous pics of the palace, but only now had a chance to visit this place. Took an organized trip there from Fuengirola. It was an easy way, but of course, the time was limited.

Alhambra was the main attraction of the trip. The day was really warm, temperature rose up to 40C degrees (104F). There were loads of people but everything was well organized and went smoothly. As it was an organized tour we had a guide who took us to all main attractions. That helped a lot especially because the place is pretty huge.

Some Facts About Alhambra

Alhambra is a palace and fortress complex built under Ismail I, Yusuf I and Mohammed V, starting in 1238. It represented the idea of paradise on earth. The materials were quite modest such as tiles, plaster and timber, but they were superbly worked and crafted. The whole space of Alhambra is a magical combo of space, light, water and decoration.

First when you arrive to the place you will walk trough the gardens and various patios & labyrinths. Everything is so well-kept, and it is not only topiary gardens but also meadow-like spots with colourful flowers.

If the weather is warm, remember to take a bottle of water with you. There is one shop, where you can buy souvenires, ice-cream and drinks - the prices are, of course, a bit high.

It took us 2,5 hours to walk trough all the main attractions there. Afterwards we continued by bus to the centre of Granada and had (only!) 1,5 hours free time. Decided to have a quick bite and then explore the old part of the city as much as possible. Unfortunately that wasn't much so definitely need to go back there!

Btw, I have a few pics of pomegranate. That fruit is the symbol of Granada. There are pomegranate trees with pale orange flowers and trees with deeper orange flowers.

Alhambra

Espanja on ihan järjettömän suuri maa ja sieltä löytyy vaikka mitä upeita paikkoja. Granada ja erityisesti siellä sijaitseva Alhambra on ehdottomasti yksi näistä kohteista. Alhambra oli ollut koko Espanjassa olo ajan bucket listallani, mutta vasta nyt pääsin siellä käymään. Valitsin opastetun englanninkielisen retken, joka lähti Fuengirolosta. Helppo ja kätevä tapa, jossa kuulee kaikkea mielenkiintoista nippelitietoa koko bussimatkan ajan. Miinuspuolena tarkat aikataulut ja rajoitettu aika kohteessa.

Alhambra oli retken pääkohde. Päivä oli harvinaisen kuuma, lämpötila kohosi 40 asteeseen. Helteistä huolimatta paikalle oli saapunut muutama muukin retkikunta. Järjestelyt sujuivat hyvin eikä missään tarvinnut jonottaa. Kiitos siitä asiantuntevan paikallisoppaan, joka tietysti tunsi koko alueen loistavasti ja pystyi näin ollen viemään ryhmämme vaivattomasti kohteesta toiseen. Alue on suuri, joten huomattavasti tehokkaampaa siellä on kierrellä oppaan kanssa kuin omin päin.

Muutama fakta Alhambrasta

Alhambrasta löytyy palatsi ja linnoitus, joiden rakentaminen alkoi vuonna 1238 Ismail I, Yusuf I ja Mohammed V aikana. Alhambra kuvastaa käsitystä maanpäällisestä paratiisista. Materiaalit olivat melko vaatimattomat - tiili, laasti ja puu - mutta kädenjälki loistavaa. Koko Alhambran alue on taianomainen yhdistelmä tilaa, valoa, vettä ja koristuksia.

Heti sisäänkäynnistä alkavat puutarhat, joiden välillä on patioita ja labyrintteja. Kaikki on kaunista ja hyvin hoidettua. Muotoon leikattujen puutarhojen välissä näkee uskomattoman kauniita ja värikkäitä niittymäisiä läiskiä.

Muista ottaa mukaan vesipullo, varsinkin jos keli on helteinen. Alueelta löytyy ainakin yksi matkamuistomyymälä, jota voi ostaa reippaan puoleisesti hinnoiteltua jätskiä ja juomia.

Kierros kesti noin 2,5 tuntia ja siinä ajassa ehti hyvin nähdä puutarhat ja palatsin. Alhambran jälkeen matka jatkui Granadan keskustaan, jossa omaa aikaa oli vain 1,5 tuntia. Ensin pikaisesti haukkaamaan ensimmäiseen vastaantulleeseen kuppilaan ja sen jälkeen kaupungille kiertelemään. Paljon ei siinä ajassa ehtinyt nähdä, joten uusi reissu on tehtävä lähitulevaisuudessa. Ehkä myöhemmin syksyllä kun lämpötilat hieman laskevat.

Muutamassa alla olevassa kuvassa esiintyy granaattiomenapuun kukkivia oksia. Granaattiomena on espanjaksi granada ja sen on Granadan kaupungin symbooli. Granaattiomenan kukat ovat väriltään vaalean oranssista syvään oranssiin.

Generalife

Located north of the Alhambra, the Generalife was the place where they could escape the itrigues of the palace and enjoy tranquillity high above the city, a little closer to the heaven. The name 'Generalife' has various interpretations, perhaps the mist pleasing being "the garden of lofty paradise". The gardens, begun in the 13th century, have been modified over the years.

Patio de Arrayanas

This pool, set beside myrtle hedges and graceful arcades, reflects light into the surrounding halls.

Patio de los Leones

built by Mohammad V, this patio is lined with arcades supported by 124 slender marble columns. At its centre a fountain rests on the backs of twelve lions.
