Design Centre Helsinki

Monday, December 5, 2016

Design Centre Helsinki opened its doors this autumn at the Arabia building (Hämeentie 135a, Helsinki). It's absolutely a fantastic idea to have 2 of Finland's most celebrated design and lifestyle brands Iittala & Arabia under the same roof together with a design museum, huge design shop and the work studios of artists.

Design Museum Arabia is located on the 9th floor of the old factory building. Now it's possible to see the history of Finnish ceramic art and glass design in one collection. There are on display beautiful pieces of Arabia mugs, cups and artworks as well as Iittala's glasses, vases and statement pieces. This certainly is the place where one can get a good idea about Finnish design.

Minimalism and clean lines are the most characteristic features of Finnish design. I guess we Finns want everything to be functional and simple but never boring. Complicated forms are not for us. Even though we use a lot of white it doesn't mean that we don't like colours. We do like colours even those bright ones but more often the kind of broken tones are more us. I would say that Finnish design is pretty simple with a playful touch.

(FI) Design Centre Helsinki avasi ovensa tänä syksynä Arabiassa (Hämeentie 135a). Todella loistava idea tuoda 2 suomalaista huippu design- ja lifestyle-brandiä Iittala ja Arabia saman katon alle. Rakennuksessa toimii nyt design museo, laajennettu Iittala Arabia design myymälä ja yleisölle avoimet taiteilijoiden studiot.

Design Museum Arabia sijaitsee vanhan Arabian tehtaan 9. kerroksessa.

So when you visit Helsinki, pop in to Design Center Helsinki, find out more about Finnish design, have a coffee or light lunch at the cafe and do some design shopping downstairs!

(FI) Kannattaa ehdottomasti poiketa mielenkiintoisessta Design Center Helsingissä, piipahtaa museon puolella katsomassa vanhoja klassikoita, istahtaa hetkeksi kahville tai kevyelle lounaalle ja jatkaa vielä kierrosta alakerran myymälässä!

    1. Even though it's "only" ceramics and glassware it gives a nice example of minimalistic design.
