Cactus Fruit Smoothie

Sunday, September 25, 2016

(EN) Found some cactus fruit in my local Lidl. Never had them before, so decided to try & make a smoothie from them. Had heard that they are actually the newest super food - full of vitamin C and other great stuff.
When halfed the cactus fruit, which is also called prickly pear, noticed that some of them were red and some yellow inside - don't really know what's the difference otherwise. Peeled the soft fruit, cut it into pieces and added it to the blender with other ingredients.

My cactus fruit smoothie:

1 banana
2 cactus fruit
A piece of fresh ginger
1 tsp lucuma powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon powder
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tsp coconut oil
Soya milk

All ingredients to the blender for a few seconds and it's ready to drink.

The taste of the cactus fruit is pretty mild - something like cucumber but a bit sweeter. The smoothie tasted delicious. The only negative side were the seeds. Cactus fruit is full of small seeds which are really hard, like tiny stones or pebbles. It's ok to eat the seeds as well and in the beginning it was not a problem but somehow the more I drank my smoothie the more difficult it got with those seeds. There must be a way to get rid of the seeds before adding the fruit to any dish, mustn't it?

What are the health benefits of cactus fruit/prickly pear?

It contains high levels of vitamin C, family B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, calcium, copper, fiber & flavonoids.
It's promoting for treating diaphetes, high cholesterol and obesity.

Kaktus-smoothie

1 banaani
2 kaktushedelmää
pala tuoretta inkivääria
1 tl lucuma-jauhetta
1/2 tl kanelijauhetta
1/2 tl kurkuma-jauhetta
1 rkl chia-siemeniä
1 tl kookosöljyä
soijamaitoa

Kaikki ainekset blenderiin muutamaksi sekunniksi ja juoma on valmis.

Kaktushedelmän maku on melko mieto, muistuttaa vähän kurkkua, mutta jonkin verran makeampi. Smootie maistui herkulliseltä. Ainoa negatiivinen puoli oli siemenet. Kaktushedelmä on täynnä pieniä, kivikvia siemeniä.

  2. In South Africa, we call those 'prickly pears'. They are delicious but you do not want to get one of those tiny hair like spikes in your finger!

  10. I've seen so many cactus fruits at the farmer's market! Maybe you can use a fine sieve or one of those jam presses to get the seeds out before putting them in your smoothie? Maybe juicing them before adding? Sounds really delicious!!
