Budapest

Thursday, January 16, 2014

I decided to start telling more about Budapest, the city where I live. Making it like series of Budapest. Telling about the different parts of the city, interesting features, where to shop, eat, get a manicure etc. At the same time I also decided to add posts in Finnish, which is my mother language. There's not been so much text anyway, the main point have been the pics I've taken. So let's see how all this will go!

Päätin aloittaa juttusarjan koskien kaupunkia, jossa asun siis Budapestia. Tarkoituksenani on kertoa Budapestin eri kaupunginosista, kiinnostavista piirteistä unohtamatta missä kannattaa piipahtaa ostoksilla, missä syödä, mistä löytyy hyvä manikyristi jne.

I better start with the basics! There's the Buda side and there's the Pest side, which are separated by the river Danube. The same river that flows also trough Vienna, Bratislava and Belgrade. Buda is the hilly residential side, where everyone wants live and have an own house with a garden. The rich people & expats usually choose this side of the city to live. Pest is geographically flat. It's for commercial & business. It's not very desirable to live there and the main group of people who do live there are elderly ones, students and poor. Of course, there're exceptions, and I'm one of those. I'm supposed to live in Buda up on the hills, but unfortunately I don't fancy living in a house with a garden -tried that, been there, not my cup of tea. Instead I like to live in a hundred-years-old building in the middle of the city.

Aloitetaan perusasioista! Budan puoli on kukkuloista asuinaluetta, erittäin haluttua sellaista. Budapestilaisen unelmana on asua Budan puolella omassa talossa jossa on puutarha. Expatit valitsevat lähes poikkeuksetta Budan puolen asuinpaikakseen. Paljon mieluummin asun sata vuotta vanhassa rakennuksessa keskellä kaupunkia.

Well, it looks like lots of text is appearing without really saying anything and I don't like to make it too long. So let's keep it short!
The city is divided into 23 districts which are called "kerület" in Hungarian. I will go out and visit every 'kerület', look around what is charasteric for each of them and then during this winter/spring tell about what I have found out in this blog. How does this sound?

Kaupunki on jaettu 23 kaupunginosaan eli 'kerület':iin. Aion talven ja kevään aikana käydä jokaisessa kerületissä, etsiä niille ominaiset piirteet ja kertoa sitten löydöistäni täällä blogissa. Miltäs tällainen kuulostaa?

  1. Kiitos, hienolta kuullostaa! Olen täältä blogistasi jo kaikki Budapest aiheiset bloggaukset mielenkiinnolla lukenut ja tehnyt muistiinpanoja. Maaliskuussa juhlimme siellä mieheni 50-vuotispäiviä joten innolla odotan uusia bloggauksiasi! Terveisin, Susanne

  2. Aina tosi mielenkiintoista kuulla paikoista missa ihmiset asuvat.

  5. That's a great project, I can't wait to see the upcoming posts :) I love Budapest, I used to live there, one of my favourite cities :) I was trying to read the text in Finnish first because I studied the language but it was a loooong time ago :( :)
Do you speak Hungarian by the way? I'm always curious to know what foreign people think of my mother language :)

    1. Thanks, let's see how it goes, hopefully well!
My Hungarian knowledge is rathr poor… I can't write it at all, never know if it's a hosszu a or o, should I write z, sz or zs… Not an easy language and I haven't found the connection with Finnish language. Somehow I manage the everyday life with my basic skills.

    2. Yeah, Finnish and Hungarian are supposed to be related but I didn't see too many similarities... Well, Hungarian is a difficult language, I understand your problem with the s, sz, z, zs etc. But don't worry about that, the more you read the easier you'll write as well :) Good luck with the project again! :)

  6. I'm so glad you're doing this! I'm an American living in Budapest until the middle of June and am looking forward to your insight and recommendations! I noticed that you mentioned Zsidro salon on Andrassy ut in a more recent post - after a lot of research, I think I'm going to give them a try - I badly need a haircut. :)
