Eugene Onegin

Saturday, February 6, 2010

Went to see Tsaikovsky's Onegin balett
at Hungarian State Opera house 11am (-2.30pm)
- somehow like these early performances,
afterwards it's still almost a whole day left
&
you get the tickets almost in 1/2 price.
.
Actually, thought that went to see a ballet
- after buying the program realized that it's an opera
- connected Tsaikovsky to ballet more than to opera
.
Tatyana & Onegin
.
Excellent performance,
even thought the singers didn't really impress
- the modern setting was fantastic
as well as the costumes
- wouldn't think that Olga's Ferrari red latex dress
would fit to 1820s Russian story,
but it worked!
As well as Tatyana's pearl grey satin trouser suit!
The choices of colours in group sets were impressive
because they were so simple & clear:
red, white, green, gold, black
.
Eugene Onegin,
(Russian: Евгений Онегин, Yevgény Onégin)
is an opera in 3 acts (7 scenes), by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.
The libretto was written by Konstantin Shilovsky
and the composer and his brother Modest,
and is based on the novel in verse
by Alexander Pushkin.
.
Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera;
the libretto very closely follows Pushkin's original,
retaining much of his poetry,
to which Tchaikovsky adds music of a dramatic nature.
.
.
The story concerns a selfish hero
who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman's love
and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.
.
The golden dresser & suits
.
The opera was first performed in Moscow in 1879.
There are several recordings of it,
and it is regularly performed.
The work's title refers to the protagonist.
